I hope to do an overview of 2008 soon (although I still have one album from which to play catch up). All of that will come later. In the meantime...
ARTIST: Sugababes
TITLE: "About You Now"
YEAR: 2007
It may be a new year, but lately I've been spinning this tune from a somewhat less new one. "About You Now" was the lead single from Sugababes' album Change, and there's something terribly catchy about it that makes me enjoy it a lot, despite its obvious flaws, such as its less than stellar lyrics. I guess I'm into feel-good music lately, and this one does to some degree have that effect on me.
Take a listen here. It's available on the Sugababes album Change.

Song of the Day: "Cash in My Pocket"
ARTIST: Wiley featuring Daniel Merriweather
TITLE: Cash in My Pocket
YEAR: 2008
Probably the last song to make a big bid as one of my favorites of the year is Wiley's latest single, featuring one of my favorite artists whose debut album has yet to be released, Daniel Merriweather. Merriweather's parts are in fact what make this for me, but Wiley does a fine job spitting his lines as well. Plus, the lyrics are pretty cool, as is Mark Ronson's production work. It's a winner.
Take a listen here. The song is available on Wiley's album See Clear Now.

Song of the Day: "Brimful of Asha"
ARTIST: Cornershop
TITLE: "Brimful of Asha" (Norman Cook remix)
YEAR: 1997
The Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) remix of Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha" was a pretty big hit back in 1997. It's not hard to see why. There's something quite undeniable about it. It's terribly hard to listen to this without being put in a good mood, and I've been enjoying spinning it quite a bit of late.
Hear it here. The song is available on many compilation albums, including Fatboy Slim's own The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder.

Song of the Day: "Therapy"
ARTIST: India.Arie
TITLE: "Therapy"
YEAR: 2009
I usually don't pay attention to leaked tracks, but "Therapy" is a track from India.Arie's forthcoming 2009 album. I happened to give it a listen, and it's great! It's got a very pop sound to it, but India.Arie still gives a good vocal performance, and the chorus is quite memorable.
Give it a listen here. The song will be released on India.Arie's album Testimony, Vol. 2: Love and Politics, due out in February.

Song of the Day: "FM (No Static At All)"
ARTIST: Steely Dan
TITLE: "FM (No Static At All)"
YEAR: 1978
I have no idea why Steely Dan's 1978 hit "FM (No Static At All)" came into my head today, but it did. I'd forgotten what a good song it is as I hadn't heard it quite some time. Very enjoyable listening to it again. I always especially liked the "nothing but blues and Elvis and somebody else's favourite song" part.
The song can be heard here. It's available on such Steely Dan collections as Show Biz Kids: The Steely Dan Story 1972-80, Citizen Steely Dan: 1972-1980, and The Definitive Collection.

Song of the Day: "No Myth"
ARTIST: Michael Penn
TITLE: "No Myth"
YEAR: 1990
Released on 1989's March, Michael Penn's "No Myth" became his biggest hit single in 1990. While he has many other great songs, it's understandable why this one would find such success. It's an amazing song. The lyrics and the vocal delivery are spot on. It's a shame that Penn faded from the limelight, despite continuing his recording career throughout the 19990s and into the current decade. Still, even discounting his many other wonderful recordings, "No Myth" would itself be an amazing musical legacy.
Hear the song here. It is available on Penn's album March. Sorry that I couldn't find the real video online. Watch it if you can. It's a keeper.

Song of the Day: "Never Be You"
ARTIST: Maria McKee
TITLE: "Never Be You"
YEAR: 1984
Maria McKee's "Never Be You" is part of the awesome soundtrack to the 1984 film Streets of Fire. I love this song, which was later a hit as done by Rosanne Cash. Lately, it's been coming up a lot in my player, and I've really got a chance to remember how awesome it is.
The song is available on the soundtrack to Streets of Fire. I can't find a streaming version online for listening.

Song of the Day: "Heartache Tonight"
ARTIST: Eagles
TITLE: "Heartache Tonight"
YEAR: 1979
Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of Eagles music, but this is one of the songs I like well enough. It seemed an appropriate theme for tonight, however, as my heart ached after a loss by the Eagles of the Philadelphia football variety. Urgh!
Here's the song. It's available on Eagles' The Long Run album, as well as the collection The Very Best Of.

Song of the Day: "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid"
ARTIST: The Offspring
TITLE: "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid"
YEAR: 2008
The Offspring's second single from their Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace album has been a huge hit at alternative radio. In my opinion, it's well deserved. There's something undeniable about this song and its energy. Perhaps it's the way it's structured, which isn't anything so unique, but is a formula executed incredibly well. Whatever the case, I've been loving this song lately.
To hear the song, click here. It is available on the album Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace.

Song of the Day: "Prove It All Night"
ARTIST: Bruce Springsteen
TITLE: "Prove It All Night"
YEAR: 1978
For election day, Bruce Springsteen has supplied my musical soundtrack. It seemed somehow appropriate, plus I was in the mood for The Boss anyway. "Prove It All Night" has been a bit of a recent obsession for me. While I still think "Brilliant Disguise" is my favourite song of his, this single from the Darkness on the Edge of Town album is way up there. It's an awesome song by a guy who's been making decades of great music.
Hear it here. The song is available on Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Song of the Day: "I Need to Know"
ARTIST: Marc Anthony
TITLE: "I Need to Know"
YEAR: 1999
While watching football most of the day, an advert kept coming on that uses this song. Earlier this year, I picked up a cheap remix single for it, and that is because it is one I remember fondly and still much enjoy to this day. The advert got it stuck in my head most of the day, so I thought I'd give it some space here today.
Listen here. The track is available on Marc Anthony's self-titled album.

Songs of the Day
These are a few songs that popped into my head during my class Thursday. I don't know what it is about that class, but I always seem to end up with songs competing with the material.
ARTIST: A Foot in Coldwater
TITLE: "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want"
YEAR: 1972
A killer track from a Canadian band that seems to be largely forgotten. Shame. This isn't the full version of the track as it's edited down, but better than nothing, so take a listen here. It's available on Best of A Foot in Coldwater, among other AFiC CDs.
ARTIST: Joy Division
TITLE: "Shadowplay"
YEAR: 1979
It recently received a minor revival when The Killers remade it. They did a good job, but nothing can top Joy Division. Listen to the song here. It can be purchased on many Joy Division sets, the most complete of which is a box set entitled Heart and Soul.
ARTIST: Yes
TITLE: "Your Move"
YEAR: 1971
"Your Move" is one of my favourite Yes tracks. I don't know why. It's played all the time on classic rock radio, but it still hasn't burned on me, despite me not even being a huge Yes fan. I guess this song just has "it." Try Seeqpod for hearing it. The song is available on The Yes Album.

Song of the Day: "Genius of Love"
ARTIST: Tom Tom Club
TITLE: "Genius of Love"
YEAR: 1982
Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" is one my favourite songs of all time. It's just that awesome. It was playing over the system before Nine Inch Nails took the stage, leading me to spotlight it today.
Hear it here. The song is available on Tom Tom Club's self-titled album.

Song of the Day: "I'm Not Losing Sleep"
ARTIST: David Bowie
TITLE: "I'm Not Losing Sleep"
YEAR: 1966
This is one of David Bowie's early singles. I'm just starting to realise how awesome Bowie is, but this particular single is one I've loved since I first heard it. It's an awesome slice of 1960s pop, and while it's not the sort of thing for which he'd become famous, it's still great.
I can't find anywhere to stream it. The song is available on various early Bowie compilations, including Early On (1964-1966). It is also available on some various artists discs.

Song of the Day: "Universal Mind Control"
ARTIST: Common featuring Pharrell
TITLE: Universal Mind Control (UMC)
YEAR: 2008
Common is a great rapper anyway, but this song, which has a kickass Neptunes beat, is amazing. I can't say anything else to really convey that. Great video too. Just listen.
Listen and watch here. It will be released on Common's upcoming album Universal Mind Control.

Songs of the Day
This time around, I'm doing a list as I browse this year's Grammy submissions. All of these are recent songs that I've enjoyed, and want to note, especially as a convenience to myself as should I want to attempt a year-end list.
All are year 2007 or 2008.
ARTIST: David Banner featuring Chris Brown & Yung Joc
TITLE: "Get Like Me"
ARTIST: Anthony David featuring India.Arie
TITLE: "Words"
ARTIST: Liam Finn
TITLE: "Second Chance"
ARTIST: Gnarls Barkley
TITLE: "Run"
ARTIST: Jennifer Hudson
TITLE: "Spotlight"
ARTIST: Eric Hutchinson
TITLE: "Rock and Roll"
ARTIST: Jack Johnson
TITLE: "If I Had Eyes"
ARTIST: Kid Sister featuring David Banner
TITLE: "Family Reunion" (this one wasn't actually submitted, but I stuck it in anyway)
ARTIST: O.A.R.
TITLE: "Shattered (Turn the Car Around)"
It's fairly safe to say that most of the current songs I've spotlighted on this blog throughout the year have no shot at a Grammy nomination, and even less at a win, although a good many great albums and songs were submitted.

Song of the Day: "I'll Never Fall in Love Again"
ARTIST: Bobbie Gentry
TITLE: "I'll Never Fall in Love Again"
YEAR: 1969
"I'll Never Fall in Love Again" has been recorded by many artists since it showed up in the musical Promises, Promises. The most famous rendition may be that by Dionne Warwick, a top ten US hit in 1970 which is great in its own right. However, I've recently become quite taken with Bobbie Gentry's rendition, which hit number one in the UK in 1969. This one retains the original verses and is sung with a somewhat different tone. Whereas Warwick's version highlights the playful aspects of the song, Gentry's is more interested in the pained ones. Both elements are there, and both do a successful job of interpreting the song; they're just different.
Check out Gentry's version of the song here, and, as a bonus, the Warwick take on it is here. Gentry's can be found on many compilation CDs, including The Very Best of Bobbie Gentry, An American Quilt 1967-1974, and a two-albums-on-one-CD reissue Ode to Billie Joe/Touch 'Em With Love. Warwick's version is, I believe, incredibly common on CD, but I've not looked into those options.

Songs of the Day
This one's a bit of a special post. I decided to take advantage of some of last.fm's library radio stations with some folks who have some jammin' libraries. These songs are all songs I heard and liked a helluva lot. I couldn't decide which I wanted to feature as a representative, so they're all here. To keep this short-ish, I'll axe my usual ramblings.

Song of the Day: "Legend of a Mind"
ARTIST: The Moody Blues
TITLE: "Legend of a Mind"
YEAR: 1968
Frequent mentions of Timothy Leary in a class I'm taking led my mind to drift to "Legend of a Mind," a track on The Moody Blues' 1968 album In Search of the Lost Chord. It's not a song to which I listen a lot, but it's quite good. One of their more progressive tracks that I actually like. I'm sure it's just as well I was focused on remembering this tune than I was on lecture.
Hear it here. (What an awesome video that I didn't expect to find!) The song is available on In Search of the Lost Chord, as well as on some Moody Blues compilations (e.g., Gold).

Song of the Day: "You'll Ask for Me"
ARTIST: Tyler Hilton
TITLE: "You'll Ask for Me"
YEAR: 2007
I was introduced to Tyler Hilton by his radio-friendly 2004 tune "When It Comes." How that song didn't become the big hit it deserved to be I'll never know. My next exposure to him was as an actor, when he appeared in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. Great movie. Small but well-performed role.
Hilton's "You'll Ask for Me" comes from a One Tree Hill TV soundtrack. I heard it for the first time recently, and it struck a chord with me. I can't say just why, but I find it a very appealing song. I don't know if it was ever sent to radio or promoted in any significant way, other than being played on the television show. Regardless, it's a cool song that deserves to be heard.
Video here. The song is available on The Road Mix: Music from the Television Series One Tree Hill, Vol. 3.
